The lateral stability of a residential building (10 floors) in the Docklands area is required to be analytically investigated under both wind and earthquake actions and its stabilizing structural elements are required to be structurally designed for both of the STRENGTH AND SERVICEABILITY limit stats in accordance with Australian standards. Typical floor plan is attached.
You are required to undertake the necessary research and conceive an efficient and effective, structurally sound, and safe lateral stability system under both wind and earthquake. Loads shall be established in accordance with the Australian wind and earthquake standards and a structural analysis shall be carried out to determine relevant member stress-resultants for the structural members. Initially, you are required to achieve the building’s stability by the lift and stairwell structural elements only, for which, the maximum wall thickness to be designed as 200 + Last 2 digits from your student ID number (mm). Verify thestrengthandserviceabilitylimit states of the lift- stairwell core structure. If the lift-stairwell core structure is not adequate, propose the use of additional shear wall sections available in the floor plan to satisfy strength and serviceability requirements.
Student shall submit a neat, orderly and succinct written design evaluation that will form the basis of the marks awarded.
This submission shall include the following in this order:
· The estimated loads (dead, live, earthquake and wind) and loads combination for the core element. (Mark 5%).Completed before Week 2 workshop.
· A brief description of the load combination(s) necessary to consider for covering all possible loading scenarios (about 10 cases). Show a 3-D stress diagram for the critical case(s) (Mark 5%).Completed before Week 3 workshop.
·Design required reinforcement for the highly stressed wall. Check the serviceability limit state of the building and determine if additional shear wall components are required (Mark 5%).Completed before Week 4 workshop.

·On A4 or A3 paper, hand-drawn sketches or CAD drafted to scale two elevations (long and short sides) and one detail showing typical connection detail between floor slab and the core’s wall. (Mark 5%).Completed before Week 5 workshop.
·Model above investigated building in RCB program. Verify reactions and frequency results with above estimated results. (Mark 10%).Full assignment submission to be made by 19thof April 2019, 23:59.
The quality and elegance of the conceptual solution, its fitness for purpose, its structural soundness and stability, and the appropriateness of the approximate structural analysis and design, will be the main qualities examined in the assessment of the submission.
Organization and Conduct
The Subject Co-ordinator will act as the client, architect or builder for the project as the case may be, as well as the arbitrator in the event of any dispute within the team. His decisions in all matters relating to the project and individual’s contributions to the team shall be final.
