University of South Carolina Racial Bias Developed within Photography Paper

Need help with my Writing question – I’m studying for my class.

1. Proposal and Outline Assignment

This assignment should include (I.) a proposal and (II.) a proposed outline (that follows specific instructions below). Note: guidelines are provided below.

Must be typed and submitted as a word document. No exceptions.

Make sure to review the rubric before starting, so that you are aware as to how your assignment will be assessed.

I. Proposal

At this stage, you will (1) choose a topic to explore and (2) develop your proposal. While you do not have to have everything worked out your proposal should clearly state the following:

1. your research topic (which must be relevant to the course and clearly stated). Consider providing a short summation of the historical significance of your topic;

2. possible avenues of exploration and discussion (relevant concepts, practices, movements, artist statements);

3. Research questions: questions you might have about a given artwork, concept, practice, movement, which you plan to research during the research stage;

4. a possible thesis statement (though this does not have to be worked out). Consider what you want to explore and why?

Guidelines:

• At least 2-3 pages typed and double space (not including your name and other details that one would find on a cover page) <– NO EXCEPTIONS. -5 point off for each line of text missing.

• 12 point New Times Roman font

• standard margins

• Edited on formal settings (for spelling and grammar). This means no: contractions, clichés, ending on a preposition, split-infinitives, casual address and/or colloquial expressions (including idioms), etc… When in doubt ask. Points will be deducted for spelling and grammatical errors; so, make sure you edit and revise before submitting.

Here are a number of possible ways to develop your topic:

1. Review the textbook (table of contents headings are helpful) and the headings on the course syllabus schedule.

2. Peruse the textbook and choose a work, or a body of work, that interests/intrigues you. The read the section that covers it to familiarize yourself with associated topics, movements, or practices.

3. Come to my office and discuss your interests. It would be my pleasure to meet with you to help you in anyway; but, please plan accordingly. A last minute address will not be viable.

II. Outline: Mapping out the details

Both your proposal and outline will require some preliminary research. As you are formulating your research topic, begin to work out a “detailed” outline of your topic/paper. Your outline must demonstrate/incorporate the following (Guidelines):

  1. the outline must demonstrate a logical (and flowing) structure. Spell it out if it helps and type in complete sentences.
  2. the outline must be formatted with multi-levels/outline number lists of your choosing. Microsoft provides outline formats (click on the multi-level/outline number lists). the outline must elaborate on the details of each section. (General titles will not suffice.)
  3. Include examples of artworks (artist, title, date, medium), which you will reference. (REMEMBER THAT TITLES ARE EITHER UNDERLINED OR ITALICIZED)

Remember, the more work put into this, the easier the time you will have writing your text.

Guidelines:

• At least 2-3 pages typed and double space (not including your name and other details that one would find on a cover page) <– NO EXCEPTIONS. -5 point off for each line of text missing.
