I’m trying to learn for my Social Science class and I’m stuck. Can you help?
The social action proposal is an opportunity to propose a social action project that could be implemented around a specific social justice issue in your community or organization. Over the course of the term, you will identify an organizational or a community intervention you could implement in your own community. Because this is an accelerated course, implementing the project is not feasible in the given time. However, you may choose to continue to work on your proposal with community partners and implement the project at a later time.
Over the course of the term, you will gradually develop a 5000-word social action proposal. In the completed proposal, you will provide a basic literature review about the organizational and community issue. You will also review other publicly available data to demonstrate why the issue is an important social justice issue in your own community. You will speak with stakeholders and assess the feasibility of your proposal. You will prepare a carefully articulated plan for engaging your organization or community, assessing the problem, planning a change effort, implementing the effort, terminating the project, evaluating the outcomes, and following up as necessary.
You’ve thought about a relevant social justice issue within your organization or community. You will use this initial reflection to guide your subsequent proposal. You will receive feedback from your instructor and classmates as you begin to articulate how your proposed social project could be implemented in your community.
Upon successful completion of this exercise, you will be able to:
- Explore injustice and oppression within the social environment at local and global levels. (PO 3)
- Develop knowledge of social work and other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks to engage, assess, intervene, and evaluate communities and organizations. (PO 6, 7, 8, & 9)
- Identify interventions to achieve macro practice goals. (PO 8)
- Interpret information and data collected from communities and organizations. (PO 8)
Your project proposal is your opportunity to identify, describe, explore, and address an emerging issue impacting your locally community and to develop a realistic and achievable proposal for how you might address it. As you complete each of the activities aimed at achieving your project proposal, think about how the activities serve as a “good fit” for demonstrating why the social issue is relevant. This is your chance to convince your instructor and your classmates that you have thoughtfully considered a social justice issue and that you can realistically propose an intervention for addressing the issue.
There are no points awarded for this exercise. You will, however, benefit from completing the exercise, as it will provide helpful academic learning opportunities that correlate with the textbook reading, as well as additional activities that support the topics of both your current and future workshop sessions.
